not a workshop – new jersey

You may remember that back in March, Rich traveled down to Nashville, TN to take part in the “Not-A-Workshop” photography workshop. Shortly after that workshop was finished, Rich and the boys from Nashville hatched a plan to bring Not-A-Workshop to New Jersey. This past weekend was the culmination of those plans as 9 students, 3 couples, and 3 speakers collaborated for what was an extremely successful day of shooting, editing, and business growth. The workshop was the idea of Nashville wedding and portrait photographer Joshua Gull, and the purpose is for a group of fellow photographers to get together in a casual format in an effort to strengthen and encourage one another. You may remember that Rich shot Kayla and Andy at the Nashville workshop, capturing Andy’s marriage proposal in the process. This time, Andy was on the other side of the camera joining Josh and Rich as one of the speakers. Each speaker had roughly 45 minutes to shoot with each of the couples and explain to the group some of the things they’re looking for while shooting, how they make their decisions, and to demonstrate how they interact with their subjects.

The morning started early with the couples arriving at 7:00 AM to have their makeup done by Tina Moore from 1SL. We can’t thank her enough for sharing her talents with us. The students began to arrive at 8:00 AM and by 8:30 we all gathered to introduce ourselves. At 9:00 AM, we were on the road to Deep Cut Gardens in Holmdel, NJ for the shooting portion of the day. This time around we did things a little bit differently. We broke the students down into groups of 3 allowing everyone to get more 1-on-1 time and we rotated the groups on 45 minute intervals, allowing each group of students to see how each speaker worked with each couple. By 11:30, we were all finished with the shooting portion and we all headed back to our home to enjoy lunch before each of the speakers edited their shoots in front of the class. The second half of the morning was followed up with talks on business topics such as SEO, marketing, pricing and client interaction. We need to give a huge thanks to the companies who helped sponsor the workshop and provided prizes and discounts for our students. Thank you so much Presetopia, ThinkTankPhoto, BlackRapid, Storyboard, Zenfolio, and Motibodo.

The following shots are a selection of Rich’s photos from the shooting portion of the day.

The other bonus this time around was that Anne was there to take behind-the-scenes shots of all of the speakers doing their thing.
