“He’s one of those that knows that life is just a leap of faith… spread your arms and hold your breath, and always trust your cape.” -Eric Bibb
While the maid of honor, Katie, was giving her toast during Alex and Khayree’s wedding reception, those song lyrics kept spinning through my head. Literally speaking, the song is about a young kid who dreams he can fly with nothing more than a flour sack cape. Figuratively speaking, it’s about believing in your dreams and accomplishing anything you set your mind to, and of course, always trusting the things that give you support… your cape.
Katie told the story of when she first realized that Alex loved Khayree. Alex and Khayree are both doctors and upon finishing med school, they began to search for jobs. Alex had called Katie and was telling her how they were using a program called Match to find a hospital that would have jobs available for both of them, while allowing them to work in their respective specialties. Finding a hospital that had positions open for both of them would greatly limit the choices, and Katie asked Alex if she was sure that she was ready for that commitment. Alex replied that the only way she would be ready is if she would have Khayree with her.
Minutes later, Khayree’s mom was on the microphone. She was so happy that Alex’s family was now joined with hers. She commented that both sets of parents had been married to each other for over 30 years, and challenged Alex and Khayree to say that same thing at their future children’s wedding in 30 years. With a great network of friends and family, and most importantly, each other, there’s no doubt that Alex and Khayree will be up for that challenge.
Alex and Khayree got married at the Mount Hope Farm in Bristol, Rhode Island. A huge shout out to Tom Janz for traveling up to Rhode Island to help me capture Alex and Khayree’s day. Anne is 9 months pregnant and due any day now. The next time you read this blog, we hope to have baby pics up!
